Answer engine optimisation strategies that get you quoted
Most AEO offers are an SEO deck with the acronym swapped. These are the answer engine optimisation strategies that decide whether a page gets quoted.

Plenty of agencies are now selling "AEO". Most of it is the same SEO deck with the acronym swapped, and you can tell because the deliverables did not change. Here are the answer engine optimisation strategies that actually move whether an answer engine quotes you, based on the pages we have watched get picked up and the ones that never did.
The question is not "do we rank"
Search gave you a list and let the reader choose. An answer engine chooses for them, then names a source or two. So the unit of competition moved from the page to the sentence. You are no longer trying to be the most relevant result. You are trying to be the sentence that gets lifted.
That sounds like a small distinction. It changes almost everything about how a page gets written.
Being the sentence, not the link. If your best paragraph needs three other paragraphs of context to make sense, it will not be quoted.
What we see getting picked up
Three things, consistently.
Pages that answer the question in the first forty words. Not a preamble about why the topic matters. The answer, stated flatly, then the reasoning underneath it for anyone who wants it.
Pages where a claim and its evidence sit in the same paragraph. An engine will not go hunting two screens away for the number that supports your sentence. Put them together or expect to be skipped.
Pages that are unambiguous about who is speaking. This is where most sites fall down, and it is the least glamorous fix on the list.
Entity consistency is boring and it decides everything
If your contact page says one email, your footer says another, and your terms page spells the company name differently, you have told the machine that you might be three organisations. It is one of the most common findings in an audit, often with a postcode or a phone number that differs by a digit.
None of that is a ranking factor in the old sense. It is worse. It is the reason a model is not confident enough to name you.
What we stopped doing
We stopped writing the 2,000 word "ultimate guide" version of pages that had a 300 word answer in them. Length was a proxy for effort back when a crawler counted words. An answer engine reading 2,000 words to find your one good paragraph is 1,700 words of opportunity to find someone else's.
We also stopped burying the specifics. The page that gets quoted names the tool, the number, the city, the timeframe. Vague copy is safe copy and safe copy is invisible.
The uncomfortable part
Most of this work has no dashboard. You will not see an "AEO score" climb. What you see, eventually, is that a prospect arrives already knowing what you do, because something told them. That is the whole return, and it takes months.
If somebody offers you a monthly AEO report with a number that goes up, ask them what the number measures.
